Sleepy-song

Even as a tiny baby, Kylie would sing herself to sleep. In the car, your arms, her bed, you could always tell when she was about to fall asleep. Its always the same song, I couldn't hum it but I know it immedietly. But as she's gotten older the sleepy songs are fewer and fewer. Yesterday I took her up for her nap and she started singing to me so I sat in the chair and just rocked her for a few minutes. I think she knew she was singing to me. I wish I could take that moment in time and capture it forever. I hope that isn't the last sleepy song I'll ever here.

She has always been such a sweet sleeper. Since she was so tiny when she was born (6 lbs, full term) she was swaddled in a bassinet next to our bed. When she was old enough, we have a blue knit blanket that a friend of my grandma's made for her (Kaitlyn has one too) that she calls "nigh-nigh" If anything ever happened to nigh-nigh I'm sure it would be the end of the world as we know it. Partly because its irreplaceable and also because so many of the sweet things she does involve nigh-nigh.

Kaitlyn-isms

I was just giving the girls a bath and K pooted in the tub. She told me, "That's okay, poots in the bath don't stink, they just make bubbles." John swears he didn't teach her that. I feel confident that she figured that out on her own which makes her smart and GROSS.

Things to remember

As the kids approach their birthday's I'm going to try really hard to keep up with things I want to remember. None of this is probably important to my five readers :) but remember, this blog is my memory book! And we still haven't taken any pictures.
There was a little boy in Kaitlyn's class named James. I'm not quite sure what was wrong with him but he was severely delayed in speech. I'm sure there were other things but I don't know what. Kaitlyn was always very protective over him, sitting by him at lunch, holding his hand in the hallway, etc. She told me about him frequently but it took me a long time to catch on to his "special needs". Anyway, he got moved to a different school in January. Last week in the car, K started talking about him again. I guess she just noticed he wasn't in her class! The whole ride home she pouted that she missed James so much and wanted to have him for a play date. She has asked about him since and insisted that he come to her birthday party. I just write this as a testament to her compassion.
Which leads me to the next thing, out of the blue a few days ago, Kaitlyn told me that she wanted to be a teacher when she grows up. She usually says a mommy. I think both are wonderful! It will be interesting to see how that happens.

Kylie is still so strong willed and she knows how to get what she wants. It is usually a source of frustration for me. She adores shoes and is impossible to take to Target or a shoe store because she will literally climb out of the cart and pull every SPARKLY shoe box off the shelf and try them on. She says hi and bye to everyone from no matter how scary they are. She mimics everything k does. She counts stairs as we go up and down. She is obsessed with papa and her cousin Leah. She pretends to talk to them almost every day. I am pretty sure she has a greater understanding of the world than I do.
I think that should have been a list rather than a paragraph!

Growing Pains

Kaitlyn has been having a rough couple of weeks. She had some mysterious illness that made her feel really bad for several days but she supposedly tested negative for strep. After three days I gave her a dose of antibiotics that I had in the fridge and she was better. Then I got sick with a razor sore throat and took a few doses of antibiotics and I feel better too. We know several people that we encountered that have tested positive for strep so I'm not convinced that it wasn't. Anyway, she has taken naps almost every day for a week which is really rare. She is always asking for food and is cranky as can be. I have officially diagnosed her with a growth spurt! I really need some help with my patience though. I ask her to do things and she either doesn't listen or has a huge meltdown. Today we were coloring and the page she wanted to color was ripped. She said something about tape so I went and taped part of the page but she didn't want it taped and out come the waterworks. I couldn't take the tape off without ripping it and I tried to tell her. I carried her to her room and she screamed, sorry to say, like a BABY for 10 minutes and she has been asleep for two hours (and I have been on the computer). I am calm with her for about 60 seconds and then I lose it so I really need help dealing with her appropriately.
You may notice no pictures in a while. That is because I'm not totally in love with how difficult John is making our new computer. One day soon I'll just do a picture post.

DISCLAIMER: I am not a fan of antibiotics and rarely take them or give them to my kids. I am well aware that you must take a full dose. However, I went to the doctor to try and get some and the "doctor" (nurse practitioner) didn't give us any so I did what I thought was right.

Things I love Thursday

I know I really need to post so I just ran across so someone who posted with the above title. I thought of a list and then realized that it's Friday. Well anyway...

1. Cuddling with a sick baby. Been doing lots of this lately.

2. Having healthy children.

3. Running around in the backyard with no shoes on and a glass of Chardonnay. <----Spring fever

4. The sound of kids laughing at each other.

5. Conversation hearts.

6. Surprises. I'm pretty hard to surprise because I always ruin them. My husband always waits until the last possible moment for a surprise so I get impatient. ie. engagement.

7. Playing video games with Johnny and eating popcorn.

8. Christmas Eve.

9. Driving with the sunroof open.

10. Reading novels in one day.

Funny, I should do this every two months or so because I know that my answers would always change. If you want to know what I've been up to, just read the list and you can guess!!!

Shyness

I just read this article about shyness (here). Lately I have been concerned about Kaitlyn's shyness, not because I want a loud extroverted child, but I don't want her to miss opportunities to have fun and make friends. We were at this birthday party Saturday and birthday's are a normal place for her to get embarrassingly shy. Large crowds of unfamiliar people have always been tough for her. I don't blame her on that but I need to teach her to assimilate rather than crawl under my skirt (which has happened!). We arrived and the first thing she did was want me to hold her. The first activity was freeze dance and she wanted hide in the corner. As a formerly shy child, I feel that she wants to join in and have fun but doesn't quite know how and of course I don't know how to encourage her. I can remember going to school and playing by myself or with one other person in the corner. I remember not wanting to put on the fireman's pants because that would make me the center of attention. I remember at my first middle school dance feeling uncomfortable at everybody dancing in a circle. All of these things I wanted to do but I didn't want to break out of my shell to do it.

Kaitlyn has many sweet personality traits and I don't want to change her. I truly embrace her innocence and loving heart. I mean she's a mini-me! The article I linked to says, "other children compete for attention and shy girls bestow it." That couldn't be more true in Kaitlyn's case. If you touch her heart one time, she will never forget you. She knows books are for mommy, Bojangles is for daddy, Saturday's are for Grandma, Aunt Sharon and Leslie can do braids, Lucy gives kisses. I just hope that I can instill confidence in her and help her to not miss out on making memories just because she doesn't know how to act. I knew that freeze dance was not up her alley and I didn't try to push her into it. I stood there with her and we silly danced in the corner. I did make her ask Woody for a balloon and watch the magic show. In situations with adults, I tell her to please speak to people when spoken too and hold my hand if she's nervous. Really, this hasn't helped. At parties, I try to pick one person she knows and just do what they are doing. After freeze dance was over she was better at staying with the group of kids but she definitely stayed quiet and to herself. I am pretty concerned about this right now because, like I said, I don't want her to spend the next 20 years missing out on all the fun. In case you are wondering, I came out of my shell sometime around 25! Do you have any suggestions? I'm searching for a couple books to read right now so we'll see how all this turns out!

Handwritting

I am not a big proponent of pushing little kids to write but over the last month or so, Kaitlyn has begun to show interest. She wants to write her name on everything. And she always writes in the air to show me what something looks like. I have watched her coloring and since I know she can hold her pencil correctly and I have resolved to spend more one on one time with the girls, I have decided to start having writing lessons. We do two letters a day, capital and lower case, and she writes her name. She can't spell her name, but she'll write it with my help :) She is doing well. And she is surprisingly confident and willing. I guess my reward of TV helps!

The last four days Kylie hasn't made me quite so crazy. I don't know if she is calming down or since my house is clean, I can give her undivided attention every waking minute!
